The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of British Columbia invites applications from outstanding candidates for a Canada Research Chair (CRC) – Tier II. The successful applicant will be eligible to hold an appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, tenure track.

We are seeking a scientist with a specific focus in translational and applied genomics in pediatric malignancy. The successful candidate will be part of a diverse and committed team of genomic scientists, bioinformaticians, molecular geneticists, oncologists, and pathologists with complementary expertise and research or clinical programs. Research will be performed in partnership with the BC Cancer Research and the Genome Sciences Centres at the BC Cancer Agency, the Childhood Cancer and Blood Research Cluster at the Children and Family Research Institute, UBC and the Children and Women’s Hospital, the Division of Pediatric Oncology, Department of Pediatrics, UBC and Children and Women’s Hospital, and the Division of Laboratory Genetics, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, UBC and Children and Women’s Hospital. The individual selected is expected to be competitive for external grant funding to develop and maintain a dynamic research program that fosters new opportunities to uncover novel genetic events in pediatric malignancies and to translate these discoveries in order to guide therapy resulting in improved outcomes. As a faculty member in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, the successful applicant will be expected to contribute to undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate teaching and actively participate in departmental activities.

The successful candidate is expected to have a solid grasp of the pathobiological basis of malignancy, especially in the area of pediatric malignancy, and a proven publication record in this discipline. Proven abilities and experience with key platforms and underlying methodologies of genetic analysis, including those designed for generation of whole‐genome sequences, as well as with hardware, software, and approaches available for analysis of data from these platforms are considered assets. Experience in developing new genetic tests and understanding the ethical and professional implications of new genetic technologies, as well as training and certification in the provision of clinical molecular diagnostics, are critically important attributes.

The successful candidate is required to have exceptional communication skills; a demonstrated or a demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and supervision of undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate students and trainees; a strong record of research productivity commensurate with their experience; demonstrated potential in establishing a successful research program; a PhD degree, MD/PhD, or equivalent with postdoctoral research experience in pediatric malignancy; and, ideally, training and certification in the provision of clinical molecular diagnostics, in which case the successful candidate will also be considered for an appointment as a Clinical Scientist at BC Children’s and Women’s Hospital in the Division of
Laboratory Genetics of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The successful candidate will be subject to review and final approval by the CRC Secretariat.

Applications, accompanied by a detailed curriculum vitae and names of three references. Applications should be submitted as a single
PDF file with the file name identifying the applicant and include:
‐ Curriculum Vitae
‐ Publication Record
‐ Evidence of teaching effectiveness
‐ Max 2 page summary of research accomplishments
‐ Max 2 page perspective on future research plans
‐ Three letters of reference (at least one not from a co‐author)
The closing date for the competition is January 31, 2013.
The anticipated start date of this position is upon a date that is mutually agreed.
