Postdoctoral Fellow in environmental medicine and epidemiology

We are searching for a post doc to Gothenburg University, an inspiring University at the west coast of Sweden. You will be positioned at the research unit Sound Environment and Health www.amm.se/soundenvironment within Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Community medicine and Public Health. The research broadly focusses on associations between occupational and environmental pollutions and human health, by conducting epidemiological studies and experimental research. There are several post docs, epidemiologists and statisticians within the department.

The research within the Sound Environment and Health is highly multidisciplinary with members across environmental medicine, acoustics, audiology, epidemiology, statistics, psychology and public health. A range of health outcomes are studied including: sleep disturbance, chronic illness, perception, hearing loss and noise annoyance. We also host a unique sound environment laboratory with high technical quality and ecological validity. It is built up as a living area where the research subjects can stay for a longer period usually a week.

Subject area

Environmental medicine and epidemiology

Subject area description

Investigating the epidemiology of noise and vibration on human health.

Job assignments

The candidate will work within two larger cohorts of inhabitants in Sweden whom are exposed to a varying degree of vibration and noise. Available questionnaire data and patient and drug registers will provide the base for the health outcomes. Noise and vibration exposures are calculated and validated by measurements. The health impacts of noise is gaining increased momentum, but the evidence on health impacts of vibration and the combination of vibration and noise are yet scarce. There will also be possibilities to investigate the health impacts of low frequency noise. Special emphasis is directed to the evaluation of exposures in relation to long and short term health outcomes, taking explanatory mechanisms of sociological, psychological and biological components into account. In order to achieve a more detailed investigation on health outcomes, the candidate will be able to link personal data from the National Patient and the Prescribed Drug registers to vibration and noise exposure, and employ obtained questionnaire data as a complementary source of information. The candidate is expected to apply epidemiological methods and statistical analyses to answer the research questions. We anticipate that, the appointed person will take an active role in the scientific writing, leading to peer-reviewed articles and grant applications. The employed person may also participate in some teaching as well as supervising of PhD and master students.

Eligibility

To qualify as a postdoctoral researcher the applicant should hold a PhD in a relevant subject. Since postdoctoral constitutes a qualifying appointment for junior researchers, we aim to target those who have a doctoral degree not older than 3 years from the application deadline.
