Postdoc/Research Scientist in Imaging

Job Description

Imaging Physics Laboratory (IPL) at the University of Houston is seeking applications for two positions: One for computational/mathematical research and another for experimental research/instrumentation/hardware. IPL investigations are rooted on developing innovative imaging techniques for applications like early stage cancer detection, materials science, defense and security and geophysics. We combine optical physics, instrumentation, image science algorithms, information theoretic and data science approaches in our research. Candidates with past experience in some of the following areas will be considered: x-ray science, single photon counting detectors, tomographic image reconstruction, benchtop optical experiments, computational imaging, microscopy, X-ray CT, scatter imaging, phase contrast imaging, tomographic imaging, instrumentation/hardware development with x-ray, optical or ultrasound. Candidates without direct experience in these fields but relevant skillsets will be considered if they are motivated to learn various aspects of our ongoing projects.

Experimental Research/Instrumentation: The chosen candidate will be leading research activities and participating in several ongoing projects in the lab with experimental benchtop system development/hardware and instrumentation. Excellent hands on technical skills in optical system design/development and data analysis is sought. Experience in using photon counting detectors such as Medipix and Timepix, X-ray CT system development etc. will be a plus. Excellent programming and quick prototyping skills and advanced knowledge of Matlab, python, C, C++, etc. desirable. Ability to interact with major equipment manufacturing industries or national/international labs and collaborations.

Simulation/Mathematical Methods: The chosen candidate will lead research on developing mathematical and computational models for several exciting new projects. Most ideas will be tested in our laboratory or with a collaborator. Experience working with computational models for x-ray tomography, detector physics and design, phase contrast imaging, ultrasound and optical imaging is desirable. Excellent computational skills, quick prototyping of novel ideas, working with high performance computing, Monte Carlo codes etc. are desirable.

Requirement: A PhD in Physics or Engineering. Both positions involve close interaction with graduate and undergraduate students and participating in multiple ongoing projects in the lab. Several industrial and clinical collaboration opportunities exist. Candidates who would like to contribute to both experimental and computational research are also welcome.

All projects are on cutting edge research topics with excellent job prospects in industry, national lab or academia. Salary and benefits are highly competitive ranging from 48K-75K per year based on past experience and accomplishments. The position also comes with outstanding health and retirement benefits. Houston is an affordable and truly international city. It is a hub for several large industry and medical schools with excellent job prospects for dual career couples. Interested candidates may apply directly with a complete CV indicating publications, experience and skillsets to Prof. Mini Das (mdas@uh.edu), Web: http://ipl.uh.edu. These positions are available immediately with flexible start date.

The University of Houston is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action institution. Minorities, women, veterans and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Additionally, the University prohibits discrimination in employment on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
