Based at the Ronald Ross building and working in partnership with research collaborators in Liverpool, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Malawi and Australia, you will investigate the genetic determinants of niche adaptation in the human bacterial pathogen, Streptococcus pneumoniae. Whole genome sequencing will determine signatures of niche adaptation in bacterial isolates multiply-passaged through in vivo infection models mimicking clinical infection of nasopharynx, lungs and brain, respectively. Mutagenesis will reproduce key genetic changes singly or in combination and RNA-seq analysis will determine the impact of adaptive mutations on bacterial gene expression. We aim to identify mutations and gene expression patterns associated with nasopharyngeal carriage versus disease, to identify vaccine candidates and targets for therapeutic intervention. You should have a PhD in bacterial molecular biology or bacterial genetics with skills and expertise in infection modelling, pathogen handling and generation and interpretation of genomic and transcriptomic datasets. The post is available for 3 years.
