Postdoctoral/Research Scientist Position on emerging imaging methods at University of Houston

Employer: University of Houston

Job Number: 4018825

Date Posted: 09/13/2016

Application Deadline: Open Until Filled

Job Description

Postdoctoral / Research Scientist Positions

Key words: Photon counting spectral detector, Inverse problem, Imaging system design, Algorithm Development

Postdoctoral fellowships/Research Scientist positions are open at the University of Houston (UH), Houston, TX. Our group is working on analytical methods/computation and instrumentation for next generation in vivo imaging methods. Topics of research in our group include research on photon-counting-spectral x-ray detectors, x-ray phase contrast imaging, tomography and image analysis, multi-modality imaging (x-ray, optical, ultrasound), molecular imaging.

Applications of our research span areas of material science, defense and security, medical/biological applications, chemical imaging and geophysics thus offering a wide array of opportunities/career paths for inpiduals trained in our group. Candidates seeking to enter these emerging research areas from other related fields are also welcome to apply if they have demonstrated a strong academic record. Both positions offer competitive benefits and opportunities for career growth.

X-ray imaging is a key modality of investigation. However, investigations into multi-modality systems (optical and ultrasound) are also being conducted. While the current focus is to solve problems in biology and medicine with novel physics and engineering concepts, the selected candidates are not expected to or required to have any expertise in biology/medical physics aspects.

Position 1: Analytical, Applied Mathematics and Computational Research: Will lead development of analytical and computational platforms for forward simulation and inverse estimation based on novel and multi-modality imaging geometries; photon counting x-ray detector design and correction models. Requires strong mathematical, analytical and computer programming skills. Prior experience in at least some of the following are essential - imaging (x-ray, nuclear imaging, optical or ultrasound), inverse problems, analytical methods, applied mathematics, high performance computation, tomographic image reconstruction methods, hyperspectral imaging, Monte Carlo simulations, quick prototyping for new ideas. Technical skills required: C/C++, Linux platform as well as shell scripting. Familiarity with Geant4, Matlab, IDL, root or python desirable.

Position 2: Experimental Research: Will lead benchtop prototype development for computed tomography systems in x-ray and optical imaging (microscopic or macroscopic). Topics of investigations will also include x-ray phase contrast imaging and use of spectral detectors, detector calibrations and correction methods, data analysis, multi-modality imaging platforms. Benchtop system design, experience in opto-mechanics, electronics and instrumentation along with strong data analysis skills are essential. Prior experience with photon counting detector platform, Medipix/Timepix detector platform is added advantage. Experience with C, Matlab, IDL or python desirable.

Both positions require a PhD in Physics, Engineering, Applied mathematics or Computer Science. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential along with a track record of academic excellence (shown via publications and conference presentations) and ability to work productively in a collaborative setting.

Positions are available immediately with a funding support available for at least three years with an option to renew annually based on performance. These positions offers competitive benefits and opportunities for career growth as well as excellent job opportunities in industry and academia. Both projects involve collaborations with CERN, national labs, industry and clinical researchers.

The University of Houston is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action institution. Minorities, women, veterans and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Additionally, the University prohibits discrimination in employment on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
