+ Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics or related Engineering discipline (e.g. materials, chemistry, mechanical, etc.) received within the last 5 years + At least three years' high-level experience in scientific computer programming for massively parallel computing clusters + Experience with using, developing, and programming multi-physics microstructural evolution models particularly, Potts and phase-field models + Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy security clearance

Desired:
+ Experience with using, developing, and programming discrete simulation methods such Potts and cellular automata, and continuum thermodynamic methods such as phase-field + Experience with using molecular dynamics to simulate sintering of powder particles + Knowledge of materials processing, especially powder processing and experience in modeling microstructural evolution during such processes + Knowledge of computational modeling and simulation, including mathematical modeling and solution of coupled systems of partial differential equations (PDEs) + Strong verbal and written communication skills and an ability to interact well with fellow technical workers of diverse technical backgrounds + Candidates must be able to publish and to present cutting edge technical work at technical conferences, and have a proven publication track record + Knowledge of materials mechanics and experience in coupling mechanics with microstructural evolution models + Experience with the SPPARKS software package (http://spparks.sandia.gov), use and application of FFT methods + Experience with code verification and modern software quality practices

Department Description:

The Multiscale Sciences Department develops advanced materials simulation capabilities at scales ranging from electronic and atomistic scales to the continuum engineering scale that utilize high-performance computational methods to solve currently intractable problems of national importance. The department is involved in national security and nuclear energy modeling and simulation initiatives. The department also leads efforts to develop peridynamics and non-local gradient free methods for solid mechanics applications involving fracture, failure, and fragmentation.
