Location: London
Salary: £36,243 to £43,483
Hours: Part Time

Why choose us?

University of the Arts London is a vibrant world centre for innovation, drawing together six Colleges with international reputations in art, design, fashion, communication and performing arts. It combines internationally recognised undergraduate and post graduate courses in performance design and scenography at Wimbledon with world leading research in these areas, including costume design, sound arts and transnational performance. The University also supports Theatre & Performance Design, an international peer-reviewed quarterly journal publishing innovative artistic practice alongside theoretical research.

The National Theatre is dedicated to making the very best theatre and sharing it with as many people as possible. It holds an extensive archive collection which includes the Jocelyn Herbert Archive, one of the most complete and extensive of the twentieth century, covering many world premieres of plays which have since come to be seen as twentieth century classics.

The role

This is an exciting opportunity for a postdoctoral research fellow to work with University of the Arts London (UAL) and the National Theatre (NT) to undertake research into the prestigious Jocelyn Herbert Archive.

In this two-year part-time fellowship, you will be required to undertake original research into Jocelyn Herbert’s legacy and expand existing research in the field of theatre design, scenography and production. Through doing this you will not only help to develop research into her particular archive but also to demonstrate the value of theatre design archives as important resources for historical and contemporary studies of production processes. Whilst inspiring a new community of researchers and practitioners, you will contribute to the NT’s learning and public engagement programmes, promoting the National Theatre and Jocelyn Herbert Archive as dynamic, investigative spaces for schools, colleges, universities and researchers as well as the general public.

Please include a brief outline of the proposed project in which the Jocelyn Herbert Archive will be used in thepersonal statement section of the application, addressing: Proposed concept; Methods; Expected outputs and dissemination; Impact (how the project will increase public awareness of the Jocelyn Herbert Archive and the discipline of theatre design)

Your profile

With a PhD or equivalent research experience, you will be an innovative and leading researcher or practitioner with a background in the field of theatre, scenography and related disciplines. You will bring innovative and creative approaches to engaging with archives along with rigorous research skills. Based at UAL and working closely with the National Theatre you will be comfortable with establishing and pursuing your own research trajectory whilst also being able to motivate and work as part of a team, sharing your knowledge and expertise. You will also have experience of working on public engagement initiatives.

Crucially, you combine these talents with a strong research profile and publications in theatre and performance. You will be expected to continue your research, while inspiring other researchers and a wider public to engage with the National Theatre and the Jocelyn Herbert archive.

In return, University of the Arts London offers generous leave, a final salary pension scheme and a commitment to your continuing personal development and training in an environment that encourages excellence, creativity and diversity.
