Postdoctoral Research Associate/ Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Computational 2D Materials : Sydney, Australia

Faculty of Science/School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences

This position will offer you an exciting opportunity to join an international collaborative project between UTS, The Flinders University of South Australia, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), and Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology, South Korea.

The overall project aims to combine calculation and experiment to discover new hybrid materials built from combinations of single-layer (2D) materials such as graphene, MoS2, phospherene and the many other 2D materials that are now known.

The role supports the computational node of the project based at UTS and is funded under an Australian Research Council (ARC), Discovery Project (DP) scheme for up to 3 years.

About the Role

This role will see you using a combination of electronic structure calculations, predominantly Density Functional theory, and machine learning techniques to develop methods for rapidly screening potentially interesting combinations of 2D building blocks. The significance of this project is that it will allow speed-up in the discovery and fabrication of hybrids.

The outcome will be an extensive database of materials properties, clear direction on how to control material properties and manufacturing protocols to build a wide range of new materials which could be used in Australian industry for new product lines.

As the successful candidate you will have responsibility for:

undertaking high quality science research in the broad area of computational 2D materials that supports the overall aims of the ARC project

producing high quality research publications in leading international journals

producing high quality research publications in leading international journals

To be successful in securing the role you will have:

demonstrated ability to undertake research in electronic structure calculations, particularly density functional theory based methods applied to the prediction of materials properties

a proven ability to conduct high quality research, evident by peer-reviewed publications and citations

an ability to work independently and in collaboration with team members

demonstrated experience in the development and delivery of innovative research

demonstrated ability to lead and create disciplinary and cross-disciplinary links and alliances with key internal and external stakeholders in the establishment of effective teams.
