The studentship provides an exciting opportunity to carry out a full-time PhD project in the challenging interdisciplinary research field of nanotoxicology. The successful candidate will explore associations between cellular uptake of nanoparticles, induction of DNA damage and their impact on modulations in [Ca2+]i. You will also explore other related parameters of cellular physiology, such as cytoskeleton remodelling and endocytosis following exposure to nanoparticles.

Swansea University's College of Medicine was founded in 2001 and its research is conducted within the Institute of Life Science (ILS and ILS-2).  In 2007 the phase 1 research facility was opened, a £50million collaboration between the Welsh Assembly Government, Swansea University and IBM, while phase 2 was opened in December 2011.

Eligibility

Academic requirements:

Candidates should have (or expect to gain) at least a 2.1 honours degree in a relevant scientific subject (genetics / biochemistry / biomedical science / molecular biology / cell biology).

Applications are sought from enthusiastic and committed individuals with experience in tissue culture, DNA damage assays, calcium signalling, actin remodelling or nanotoxicology.

Experience in cell signalling (Western blotting, real-time PCR and transcription factor analysis) would also be desirable.

Additional training will be provided and the successful candidate will join a thriving group of 16 members (PhD students, post-docs and technicians).
