Postdoctoral Research Position in Seabed Geophysics : Victoria, Canada

The geophysics and acoustics group at the University of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, seeks a postdoctoral researcher for a 2 year position in seabed geophysics / geoacoustics / seismology. The starting date is May 1, 2015 (a later date is negotiable). Candidates should hold a PhD degree in geophysics, acoustics, statistics, physics, or computer engineering and have a strong background in physics and statistics. In particular, a background in inverse theory, Markov chain Monte Carlo methods, sequential Monte Carlo methods, computational acoustics/seismology, high performance computing including message passing and general purpose graphics cards, and/or numerical methods are an asset. Programming skills in Fortran, MPI, CUDA, and Matlab are also an asset. Candidates should be fluent in written and spoken English and have strong communication and technical writing skills.

The research project will develop probabilistic (Bayesian) inversion methods to quantitatively study shallow-water (10s of metres) seabeds which will provide crucial information for the detection of unexploded ordnance (UXO). Currently, UXO detection and classification is well studied on land but remains a challenging inference problem underwater. Detection success can be significantly enhanced when the sediment structure and relevant properties are quantified. This project will develop some of the numerical inference/inversion methods required to analyze data from a seismo-acoustic system developed in collaboration with Charles Holland at the Pennsylvania State University.

Initial appointment is for one year with the option of renewal for a second year (given satisfactory performance). Salary and benefits are $55,000 (CAD) and the position includes funding to attend one international conference per year. The University of Victoria is located in Victoria, the capital of British Columbia on Vancouver Island. The area offers a high quality of living and outstanding outdoor recreation (hiking, biking, kayaking, surfing, skiing, and mountaineering). Applications should include a cover letter, a one page research statement, curriculum vitae, the names and contacts (telephone numbers and e-mail addresses) of two referees, and copies of your two career-best journal publications in a single PDF file. Please email applications to Jan Dettmer and Stan Dosso, School of Earth and Ocean Sciences, University of Victoria, Victoria BC, Canada, jand@uvic.ca and sdosso@uvic.ca. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled….
