About Sandia-Sandia National Laboratories is the nation's premier science and engineering lab for national security and technology innovation. We are a world-class team of scientists, engineers, technologists, post docs, and visiting researchers all focused on cutting-edge technology, ranging from homeland defense, global security, biotechnology, and environmental preservation to energy and combustion research, computer security, and nuclear defense.

Department Description -The WIPP Performance Assessment and Decision Analysis Department is responsible for performing probabilistic system assessments and related uncertainty/sensitivity analyses for implementing WIPP recertification and/or modification strategies. Department 6211 is responsible for designing and managing the Performance Assessment for each recertification and interim modification to the WIPP certified baseline. The Department in Sandia's Carlsbad Office has the lead role in designing, carrying out, analyzing the results of, documenting, and defending (1) the recertification calculations to demonstrate continued compliance with EPA's regulations, (2) the calculations to prepare applications to EPA for modifications to the present certified baseline for WIPP, and (3) the decision analyses for selecting cost-effective modifications or strategies.

This position resides in Carlsbad, NM
This opening is for a full-time staff member in the areas of high performance and highly parallelized computing and code development on multiple platforms for coupled heat transfer, multiphase flow, and multicomponent reactive transport simulated within the open source code PFLOTRAN. The successful applicant will be expected to conduct innovative research, develop and manage open-source software, apply novel methods to challenging coupled flow and transport problems, and collaborate with geoscience and repository science research groups. The successful applicant will also be expected to develop and apply scientific and engineering methods through lab- and field-scale experimentation to develop or demonstrate new designs, concepts, materials, processes, or systems. This position is for a motivated and enthusiastic individual with a background in engineering, geoscience, mathematics, statistics, hydrology, and computer science, or related areas.
Applies integrated technical judgment--which requires using the scientific method to recognize and formulate problems, to collect data through observation and experimentation, and to formulate and test hypotheses--to anticipate, innovate, and deliver solutions to Sandia National Laboratories missions. Roots the work in the fundamentals of science and engineering while applying a deep understanding of engineering and scientific principles. Creates and applies scientific theories and laws and engineering methods used within scientific and engineering disciplines to develop or demonstrate new designs, concepts, materials, machines, products, processes, or systems. Uses physical and computational simulation, analysis, and evaluation as inherent activities of development. Plans, conducts, and executes Sandia's science and engineering programs within the spectrum of fundamental research, development, or demonstration.

Conducts research in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, and geospatial engineering. Studies composition and structure of rocks, minerals, sediments, and fossil remains to identify and determine sequence of processes affecting development of earth's crust. May include study of extraterrestrial rocks and minerals. Applies knowledge of chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics to explain these phenomena. Applies geological knowledge to engineering in support of Sandia's mission. Work may include issues in hydrology, hydrogeology, geophysics, and seismology.

Primary Job Duties-Position focus will be risk analysis and includes R&D in development and advancement of high performance computing open-source software and methods for high-resolution modeling of large-scale flow and transport problems involving coupled physicochemical processes. The emphasis of this focus is the development of advanced and generalized simulation models for the analysis of geologic nuclear waste disposal systems. The successful candidate will be expected to provide technical expertise to this program area and develop and maintain key capability within PFLOTRAN in support of these programs. Responsibilities include the documentation, programming, and testing (i.e. automated builds with unit and regression tests, etc.) of new process models, and maintenance of software infrastructure on computing platforms at Sandia. The successful candidate will also be expected to provide technical expertise to future programs involving geologic nuclear waste disposal systems as well as other areas where the candidate's skills can be utilized
