Applications are invited for a 2-year postdoctoral scientist position to study sulfur and iron biogeochemistry of the seabed. The position is available from 1st March, 2015.

The Center for Geomicrobiology is a Center of Excellence funded by the Danish National Research Foundation (Danmarks Grundforskningsfond). The Center is headed by Prof. Bo Barker Jørgensen and includes as partner the Section for Microbiology, Department of Bioscience, Aarhus University.

The successful candidate will be employed by the Department of Bioscience, Center for Geomicrobiology (http://geomicrobiology.au.dk) and will be a part of the Microbiology/Geomicrobiology research group at the Department of Bioscience. The Center for Geomicrobiology studies the microbiology and biogeochemistry of marine sediments, targeting microbial communities that live in the sub-seafloor and affect geological processes and global element cycles.

We seek a highly motivated candidate with an academic background and documented experience in marine biogeochemistry. The chosen candidate will study the coupled sulfur and iron cycles in marine sediments combining radiotracer and stable isotope techniques. Particular focus will be on the cryptic sulfur cycle with concurrent sulfate reduction and re-oxidation of sulfide. The candidate should be experienced in analytical techniques of inorganic geochemistry and in isotope ratio mass spectrometry.

Qualifications must include:

  • relevant university education and PhD degree,
  • solid background in inorganic geochemistry and isotope geochemistry,
  • ability to work and collaborate in a group, to develop new ideas, and to write and communicate in English.

The place of work is at the Department of Bioscience, Aarhus University, Ny Munkegade 114, DK-8000 Aarhus C, Denmark (http://bios.au.dk/en/). Most work is laboratory-based but the candidate should be prepared to participate in field expeditions at sea.

Applicants seeking further information are invited to contact: Professor Bo Barker Jørgensen, phone: +45 20102123+45 20102123 (cell) or 87156563, e-mail: bo.barker@bios.au.dk
