Fifty percent of all science created in Brazil is produced in the State of São Paulo. The state hosts three of the most important Latin American universities: Universidade de São Paulo (USP), Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP) and Universidade Estadual Paulista (UNESP).Other universities and 19 research institutes are also located in São Paulo.The São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), one of the leading Brazilian agencies dedicated to the support of research, has ongoing programs and support mechanisms to bring researchers from abroad to centres of excellence in São Paulo.The Young Investigators Awards program is part of FAPESP’s strategy to strengthen the state’s research institutions, favouring the creation of new research groups.
