Complex networks and computational social science have emerged as a truly multidisciplinary endeavor of computational science, statistical physics, and sociology, addressing questions of human behavior quantitatively from the level socially interacting individuals to society level collective dynamics. The development of ICT shapes our ways to communicate, socially interact, do innovations and create products and services making our socio-economic system information-based and thus our ‘real world´, yet at the same time generating Big Data for to be used to study the new reality of our social behavior. Here the tools of complexity science together with ICT-based datasets give insight into the complex structural and dynamic features of social interaction leading to formation of groups and communities, spreading of social influence and collective behavior in social networks. The main research objective is to form an integrated, multi-level view to the complex dynamics of human social interactions up to collective social dynamics.

The Complex Systems group at Department of Biomedical Engineering and Computational Science (BECS) of Aalto School of Science has together with several international collaborators played a pioneering role in several aspects of the above mentioned and related research questions, as evidenced by publications in leading scientific journals (PNAS, PRL, PRX, Plos One, NPG Scientific Reports, Proceeding of the Royal Society B etc.). Recently this group was rewarded for funding for the project “Complex Social Dynamics in Networks – COSDYN” from the Academy of Finland for 2014-2017. The general aim of this project is to investigate Social Dynamics in Networks, focusing on the following sub-topics: 1. Dynamics of networks, 2. Processes on networks and 3. Temporal networks.

For this purpose we are opening a postdoctoral researcher position for the full duration of the project till the end of 2017. The starting date of the position is November the 1st, 2014, but a later start is negotiable, if necessary. We are looking for candidates with background in complex networks, computational science, statistical physics, or quantitative methods in social sciences. We also expect a good command of computing and English communication skills. In particular we value candidates who have worked on computational data (Big Data) analysis and modelling. The selected candidate will be working in the research group of Prof. Kimmo Kaski at Department of Biomedical Engineering and Computational Science of Aalto University.

The application material for the position includes:
• A brief statement (no more than 2 pages) of the research interests and
background
• Curriculum vitae
• List of publications
• Short description of teaching experience
• Names (with contact information) of two senior academics available for
reference
• Degree certificate of the PhD degree, including a transcript of the doctoral
studies. In case the doctoral degree is still pending, an up-to-date study
transcript indicating the completion date of the degree

All application materials should be submitted in English. The application materials will not be returned.
