EOE Statement:
Washington University in St. Louis is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer and encourages applications from women, ethnic minorities, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.

Essential Functions:
A postdoctoral position is available immediately in the laboratory of Bruce Carlson at Washington University in St. Louis. The main focus of research in the Carlson lab is to understand information processing by sensory systems, using an integrated mechanistic and evolutionary approach. We are interested in stimulus encoding and central processing, how evolutionary change in sensory systems mediates adaptive diversification of behavior, and the influence of behavior on ecological interactions and evolutionary processes. We employ a wide range of techniques, including in vivo and in vitro electrophysiology, neuronal imaging, neuroanatomy and histology, computational modeling, behavioral observation and playback, and field work. Currently, a major focus of the lab is in understanding evolutionary change in the coding and processing of behaviorally relevant stimuli in divergent sensory systems (see Carlson et al., 2011, Science 332: 583-586).The successful candidate will have an opportunity to learn and combine various electrophysiological and imaging approaches with behavior, anatomy, and computational modeling.More information can be found on the lab web site

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in biology, neuroscience, or a related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience with electrophysiology is highly preferred.

Post Doc Instructions:
Highly competitive salary and benefits are available and will be commensurate with experience.Washington University offers a collaborative, interdisciplinary training and research environment, with an active and highly ranked neuroscience community. There are ample opportunities for collaboration within the department, as well as with faculty in several other departments on the Danforth campus and at the nearby medical school.
