Research Associate in Effective Membranes for Hydrogen Purification and Integration with Fuel Cells

The appointment will be full time on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £32,699 to £39,523 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.

Applications are invited for a Research Associate who will work with Professor Xiao Guo in the Department of Chemistry at University College London. The main aim of the project is to develop effective membranes for in-line hydrogen purification, monitoring and integration with fuel cells. The post is funded by the EPSRC as part of a consortium for the development of innovative membranes and monitoring systems for cost-effective fuel cell electric vehicles.
The postholder will be required to undertake innovative research involving the design and development of membranes for effective impurity sorption and separation from hydrogen molecules.

The appointment is for 24 months initially and start date is as soon as possible.

The successful applicant will have a PhD degree or equivalent in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and/or Experimental Physics. Experience in the synthesis and characterisations of nanostructures and micro-/meso-porous materials, particularly involving gas sorption, separation and filtration, is essential. Candidates must demonstrate a clear understanding of molecular interactions with nanostructures, surfaces and materials, and knowledge of a wide range of spectroscopic, microstructural and thermochemical characterisation techniques.

Please note, appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at research assistant Grade 6 (salary £28,621 – £30,180 per annum including London Allowance of £2,862 p.a.) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
