A Post-Doctoral Research Associate is needed for a project in fifth generation (5G) Wireless Communication Networks for 1 year starting no later than 1 April 2014 in the first instance.

This 5G project involves 1 professor, 2 PDRAs, and 1-2 PhD students at Heriot-Watt University, as well as 2 professors and one RA at the University of Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. The overall aim of this project and potential following-on projects is to develop key technologies for 5G wireless communication networks, including, e.g., massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technologies, distributed antenna system (DAS), heterogeneous networks, cognitive radio networks, green communications, millimetre wave communications, visible light communications, and mobile femtocell technologies for high-mobility communications.

The major role of this PDRA post is to carry out channel measurements and develop realistic channel models for millimeter wave (mmWave) wireless communication systems. The key objectives are: 1) to evaluate and compare statistical channel properties between conventional wireless communication systems (frequency bands ranging from 900 MHz to 3 GHz) and mmWave wireless communication systems (frequency bands ranging from 3 GHz to 300 GHz); 2) to carry out channel measurements for mmWave wireless communication systems in various indoor and possibly outdoor environments, covering both large-scale and small-scale fading; 3) to develop new realistic channel models for mmWave wireless communication systems with accuracy-complexity trade-off, verified by corresponding channel measurements; 4) to evaluate the impact of developed channel models (e.g., model parameters and statistical properties) on the performance (e.g., bit error rate) of mmWave wireless communication systems.

We are seeking to recruit an experienced and highly motivated RA willing to work as part of a team. Applicants should have a PhD degree (or have submitted a PhD thesis) in Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering or a related discipline, have excellent knowledge and strong background in mathematics, stochastic processes, and wireless communications, and have considerable experience in wireless channel measurements/modelling, evidenced by high-quality research publications. The applicants should also have excellent written, oral presentation, and interpersonal skills, and Software programming skills (Matlab and C/C++) appropriate for wireless simulation work. It is desirable that the applicants have some knowledge in mmWave wireless communication channels and systems.
