We have an opportunity for a Postdoctoral Scientist in the group of Dr Frank von Delft, jointly head of the Protein Crystallography group at the SGC and beamline I04-1 of Diamond synchrotron.

The post is part of the European Lead Factory (ELF)’s Work Package 6, which aims to characterise fully the compounds identified in the ELF’s High Throughput Screens. This post is tasked with attempting to solve the structures of up to 6 ELF targets each year, both in unbound form and bound to one or more of the identified compounds. It will provide many opportunities to collaborate scientifically with the various groups Europe-wide who provide the targets to the ELF for screening, including supporting medicinal chemistry projects as these arise, which may require considerable protein engineering to find suitable crystal forms. Some of these targets may also be suitable for the fragment screening by soaking being established in the group, depending on the collaborators for the target.

A strong interest in developing methodology is essential, along with extensive experience in molecular biology, protein chemistry and protein crystallography; an interest in programming and/or robotics is a distinct advantage. A PhD (or equivalent) around Protein Crystallography, or equivalent training and experience is essential. The project is a close collaboration with the biotechnology group (Nicola Burgess-Brown), who runs the ELF-funded protein production effort.

The post reports to the Principal Investigator of the group, and will work closely with the group’s Team Leader in the SGC laboratory. You must be both organised and thorough, with an aptitude for well-defined, systematic experimental work. The position will interact with many people in both the Protein Crystallography group as well as the whole SGC, so the ability and willingness to communicate and collaborate will be essential.
