The Institute for Infectious Diseases and the Hapfelmeier Laboratory for Intestinal Microbiology and Infection invite applications for a postdoc fellowship. The Hapfelmeier group is active in the areas of mucosal immunology, bacterial pathogenesis, intestinal microbiology and microbiome research.

Description

Project outline: The Hapfelmeier group aims at understanding how the gut immune system selectively and appropriately reacts to the virulence of pathogenic bacteria. We are the inventors of the “Reversible Colonization” model published in Science in 2010 (Science 328, 1705), a novel transient and quantitative live bacterial colonization system. This postdoctoral project is envisioned to utilize newly developed variants of this system and germ-free/gnotobiotic animals. The general aim is to precisely quantify and characterize the immunogenic “essence” of bacterial pathogenicity and a better understanding of the causal relationship between bacterial behavior and immune recognition. This postdoc position will be generously supported by a European Research Council Starting Grant. We offer excellent scientific training, multidisciplinary expertise, a supportive team, and access to substantial scientific resources including an internationally leading gnotobiotic animal facility. Your profile: We are looking for talents with a strong early achievement record, ideally with a background in (mucosal) immunology and inflammation, and/or immunology of infection. We will also consider interesting proposals from applicants with other profiles. We have broad interests, and you will be able to interact with highly skilled experts in bacterial pathogenesis, gnotobiotic animal models, bacterial genetics and computational biology. We invite international applications from all countries and nationalities. The laboratory language is English. Our commitment: We wish to create best possible conditions for young talents to network, be creative and start developing their own line of research. Although not a requirement, prospective postdocs will likely be strong candidates for research stipends for additional support or extension of their appointment. We will strongly support such applications.
