Sandia National Laboratories is searching for a Post Doc Researcher in Arctic Field Measurements to join the Combustion Chemistry and Diagnostics Department team members located in sunny Livermore, California.

Department Description
The Combustion Chemistry and Diagnostics Department is part of Sandia's Combustion Research Facility (CRF) in Livermore, California, where over 100 scientists, engineers, and technologists conduct basic and applied research to improve our nation's ability to use and control combustion processes efficiently and cleanly. Under the principal sponsorship of the Department of Energy's Office of Basic Energy Sciences, the Combustion Chemistry and Diagnostics Department conducts fundamental experimental, theoretical, and modeling research to develop a foundational understanding of the key chemical processes that underlie the complex mechanisms of combustion. Additional programs investigate the effects of combustion emissions on atmospheric composition and climate. Research areas include chemical dynamics and spectroscopy, theoretical and experimental chemical kinetics, flame chemistry and modeling, and gas-phase and particulate diagnostics development and deployment.

Primary Job Duties
Sandia National Laboratories invites applications for a postdoctoral position in Livermore, California to be part of team making in situ measurements of black carbon and methane in the Arctic. This position involves characterizing field instruments for the detection of atmospheric black carbon aerosols and greenhouse gases, deploying these instruments for long-term measurements in Barrow, AK, and analyzing the results. The postdoctoral associate will work closely with members of a multidisciplinary team of researchers engaged in developing in situ instrumentation, performing laboratory characterization studies, making field measurements of black-carbon greenhouse gases and their isotopologues, analyzing results using regional chemical transport models, and assessing climate impacts using global climate models. The postdoctoral associate will be responsible for instrument characterization and deployment, troubleshooting, field and laboratory data analysis, and communicating results under the direction of the principal investigators on the project.

Post Doc Hiring Program
The Post-Doctoral Appointee Program is designed to recruit outstanding Ph.D. applicants to assist a line organization in meeting its mission objectives and to provide a professional technical work environment for the employee. The Ph.D. must have been conferred within one to five years prior to employment. These assignments are for a one-year period, with the option at management’s discretion to serve no more than five additional one-year assignments. Extensions of up to six years require employee's manager approval. Six years or greater requires employee's manager and HR VP approval.

Required
• A Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences or related field
• A strong publication record, a good work ethic, strong verbal and written communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to make original scientific contributions and work effectively on a team

Desired
• Preference will be given to applicants with experience in aerosol measurements, measurement and calibration of isotopic ratios of atmospheric gases, electronic design, and remote control of scientific equipment, Arctic science, field measurements, laser diagnostics, flow systems, inlet design, and scientific programming.
