Research Associate/Senior Research Associate* Senior Scientist in Cardiovascular Research

Cardiovascular Epidemiology Unit , Department of Public Health and Primary Care (DPHPC), Strangeways Research Laboratory, Worts Causeway, Cambridge CB1 8RN

*NB: The status of Senior Research Associate is awarded on the basis of individual merit and may be awarded to the successful candidate if approved by the Faculty Board of the Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine

The funds for these posts are available until 31st December 2016 in the first instance.

The Cardiovascular Epidemiology Unit (CEU) within the DPHPC (one of Europe's leading academic departments of population health sciences) is an internationally recognised interdisciplinary group currently comprising >50 staff and students.

We are seeking a talented and ambitious scientist who is interested in establishing and leading high impact large-scale studies of cardiovascular disease. Specific themes of particular interest are:

- lipids and lipoproteins

- inflammation

- iron metabolism

- metabolomics

- cognate areas of cardiovascular disease epidemiology involving integrative analyses of biomarker and genetic data

It is expected that the post-holder will develop and lead projects in one (or more) of the above themes. Such analyses will be expected to provide internationally unique and unusually detailed insights into the causal role of risk factors in cardiovascular disease, providing important evidence for drug development and public health interventions. The role will involve coordinating work to achieve a series of high-impact publications.  Analyses will initially be based in existing CEU datasets, which combine lifestyle, biochemical, genetic and health outcomes information in a total of >3million participants, but will ideally increasingly involve new studies/collaborations established by the post-holder.

The post-holder will have: (1) a relevant quantitative background (eg, PhD in Epidemiology and at least three year's post-doctoral experience), (2) a sound understanding of epidemiological and statistical concepts, particularly in relation to cardiovascular epidemiology (3) Experience in working with large, complex epidemiological datasets (4) A strong track record of authoring scientific publications (including first-author publications), ideally including high-impact journals, (5) Experience of leading research projects, (6) Experience of supervising junior staff or students. The post-holder should have excellent organisational and communication skills, particularly in the context of large international consortia.  The ideal candidate will have scope to progress to fully independent team leader in the medium term.

Informal enquiries can be made to Dr Adam Butterworth (by email asb38@medschl.cam.ac.uk or telephone +44 (0) 1223 748673) or Dr Emanuele di Angelantonio (by email ed303@medschl.cam.ac.uk or telephone +44 (0) 1223 748659)

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
