Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to work in the laboratory of Dr Paul Nicholson at the John Innes Centre.

Eyespot is a highly damaging disease of the stem base of cereals. The gene Pch1 confers potent resistance to eyespot but its use has been restricted because of associations with deleterious effects on yield. Pch1 was introduced into wheat from a wild relative. We have defined the position of Pch1 on chromosome 7D and produced plant materials to enable the position to be refined further. The postholder will be responsible for fine mapping and cloning of Pch1. This will require extensive use of bioinformatics relating to the exploitation of synteny to develop gene-based DNA markers and the use of these markers on recombinant populations. An excellent knowledge of cereal genetics, bioinformatics and molecular biology will be required to achieve these goals. A second trait, increased protein content, was introduced on the same chromosome segment. The post holder will also be responsible for determining the location of the gene(s) conferring this. This work will be carried out in collaboration with breeding company partners.

The post will also involve the generation of new populations for phenotyping and genetic analysis and so requires knowledge and experience of cereal breeding and cultivation. The post holder will be responsible for controlled environment and glasshouse trials to assess eyespot resistance levels in populations of progeny from crosses between selected resistant and susceptible parents.

This position will require extensive interaction with industrial partners to ensure that efficient progress is maintained. The post holder will communicate results to the line manager for dissemination to research partners and sponsors and prepare reports and primary drafts of manuscripts for publication.

Salary on appointment will be within the range £28, 100 to £34, 430 per annum depending on qualifications and experience. This post is for a contract of 42 months in the first instance.
