The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in areas of medical science including molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, cellular virology, and nutrition. The department offers an international study and working environment, including around 300 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel.

Research
The Gastrointestinal Genetics team led by Associate Professor Mauro D’Amato strive to characterize the genetic architecture of complex gastrointestinal diseases, and the relationship between human genome variation and gut metagenome complexity. Research findings are aimed at translational applications in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and other GI diseases (for ref see Gastroenterology 2010;138:98; Nat Genet 2010;42:332; Nat Genet 2010;42:1118; Nat Genet 2011;43:246; Gut 2011;60:1671; Nat Genet 2011;43:1066; Nature 2012;491:119; Gut 2013;62:952; Gastroenterology 2013;145:339).

Position
We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to take on a leading role in a multidisciplinary and international project that aims at integrated analyses of large datasets in IBD. The foundation of the project is the use of recent genetic data (163 IBD risk loci) for the identification of novel diagnostic and prognostic markers, and the establishment of disease predictive scores based on personalized omics profiles. We also hypothesize that novel IBD therapeutic strategies (including drug repositioning) may be designed based on bioinformatic and experimental exploitation of such genetic information. The position is key to the project for the bioinformatic and biostatistic integration of omic data from different platforms, and involves applying and eventually developing statistical and computational methods for the analysis of high-throughput genetic, epigenetic, transcriptomic, and proteomic profiles. The study has been selected for an AstraZeneca-KI Translational Science Research Project Grant, and has received funding for 4 years.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible for a position as postdoctoral research fellow if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc. The successful candidate ideally has the following profile:
• PhD in computer science, bioinformatics, biostatistics, genetics, biology or related field with experience in analysis of large datasets.
• Strong biological understanding, and significant experience with biodatabases and bioresources are a must.
• Experience in handling large datasets, data integration and multivariate statistical analyses.
• Scripting experience in R and in either Perl or Python, as well as in programming language (such as C++ or Java) are of advantage.
• Ability to manage simultaneous projects and to interact well with others irrespectively of function or level.
• Scientifically creative, passionate for discovery and achievement oriented
• Fluent in English.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English:
- A curriculum vitae, including date and title of PhD thesis, current and previous positions, academic distinctions, detailed description of computational and, eventually, experimental skills and a full list of publications.
- A letter of motivation, which includes the names, tel and email address of 2 referees.

The application is to be submitted via the NetRecruiter system.
