The ALPHA experiment at CERN has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral candidat. The position, financed by an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council, is initially for two years.

The focus of the research program will be to develop the laser systems (243 nm) necessary for conducting spectroscopy on trapped antihydrogen atoms. Candidates must have a recent (within the last five years) PhD in physics.

Preference will be given to outstanding candidates having experience involving laser interactions with trapped atoms or ions. Knowledge of cryogenic and UHV systems is also highly desirable.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in all aspects of the collaboration’s experimental program at the Antiproton Decelerator at CERN. This includes commissioning of the new ALPHA-2 antihydrogen trap and involves rotating shift work, as the experiment is manned around the clock. We seek dedicated, self-motivated individuals who wish to make an immediate impact on a highly visible experiment.

Formal employment will be with the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Aarhus University.

Interested candidates should send their CV and a brief statement of their qualifications and research interest. Please include the names and contact email addresses for three references, but do not ask for letters of reference to be sent at this time.

For more information please contact Professor Jeffrey Hangst, Spokesperson, the ALPHA Collaboration at CERN: jeffrey.hangst@cern.ch
