Postdoctoral Research Assistant

University of Oxford -Oxford e-Research Centre

Grade 7: £29,837 - £36,661 p.a.

Applications are invited for a fixed-term post within the ARTEMIS group which spans across the Oxford e-Research Centre and Oxford Astrophysics at the University of Oxford. The post is available for a period of 24 months, commencing March 2014.

The successful applicant will have a technical role working on the Astro-Accelerate project that focuses on many-core acceleration of software for real-time data processing in pulsar and fast radio burst surveys. The role supports the ARTEMIS real-time surveys, currently making use of the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR), with other major radio telescopes commencing similar surveys in the near future. The role involves designing, producing and evaluating highly optimised modular software for many-core platforms, such as GPUs or Xeon Phi. Additionally, the successful applicant will work closely with the SKA Time Domain Team collaboration, consisting of researchers from Oxford, the University of Manchester and the Max-Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn, Germany. The post will be situated in the Oxford e-Research Centre and has close collaborative ties with the Oxford Astrophysics department.

Expertise in many-core computing with an emphasis on experience using the CUDA programming language or OpenCL are required. Prior experience using many-core technologies for real-time data processing would be an advantage.

Applicants should possess (or be very close to obtaining) a doctorate in scientific computing, engineering, physics, or a related field to the project defined above.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on 13 January 2014.
