The role of the Tis11 family of RNA-binding proteins in the regulation of muscle-immune interactions and regeneration in Duchenne muscular dystrophy Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position funded by the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign for a period of two years. This exciting project will investigate the role of RNA-binding protein (RNA BP) function in the context of the damaging muscle inflammatory response that occurs in muscular dystrophy. We have initial in vivo data to suggest that the Tis11 RNA BP family is involved in communicating muscle damage, and that muscle regeneration is severely impaired in the absence of Tis11b and Tis11d proteins.

The lab combines a range of approaches to the investigation of adult muscle stem cell and muscle function: use of genetically modified mice; isolation of primary muscle stem cells via FACS; immunofluorescence and other techniques to investigate cell biology; RNA-seq; in vivo stimulation of muscle degeneration and regeneration. The project will provide the opportunity to develop novel techniques for the investigation of RNA-binding protein targets. We benefit from interactions with neighbouring departments and institutes within the central Cambridge area (Departments of: Physiology Development & Neuroscience; Biochemistry; Gurdon Institute; Cambridge Stem Cell Institute). Our recent publications include: J Cell Sci 126: 565 and Stem Cells 31:1597.

Candidates should have a strong background in stem cell biology and some experience in working with mouse models. A background in muscle stem cells will be an advantage. Experience is highly desirable in FACS sorting, primary tissue culture, immunofluorescence, and desirable in RNA-seq and related techniques, although training will be given to the appropriate candidate. Candidates will hold a PhD in stem cells or a related subject.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.
