The Bellan Lab at Vanderbilt University seeks an outstanding postdoctoral researcher to work on fabricating and characterizing 3D cell-lined microfluidic networks in biomaterials. The researcher will help produce artificial capillary beds in hydrogels using non-traditional microfabrication techniques, and will culture mammalian cells within the resulting 3D matrices.

The overarching goal of this work is to produce a vascular network, including capillary beds, that is able to sustain cells within thick artificial tissue by providing necessary oxygen and nutrients. The resulting constructs may then be translated to the clinic for regenerative purposes, in addition to serving as model systems.

Responsibilities of the successful candidate will also include communicating results to the scientific community through publications and presentations and supervising students. The successful candidate will work in a highly interdisciplinary environment, and must be able to quickly learn techniques from a wide range of fields.

REQUIREMENTS: a Ph.D. in bioengineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, chemical engineering, or related field. Experience in one or more of the following technical areas is required: hydrogels, 3D cell culture, microfluidics, biomaterials, enteric coating materials. Must possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to contribute in a multidisciplinary team setting. Excellent oral and written communication skills required, as is the ability to follow safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment.
