Job Description

• Postdoctoral Fellowship within the Virtual Nanoscience Laboratory
• Contribute to the development of new theoretical and computational capabilities, and become part of a new direction in nanoscience research
• Join CSIRO – Australia’s premier science and technology research organisation

The Position:
CSIRO Materials Science and Engineering is seeking to appoint a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to take a substantive role in developing statistical descriptions of nanostructures. The Fellow will play an important role in development of new theoretical and computational capabilities in the Virtual Nanoscience Laboratory (VNLab), under the direction of Office of the Chief Executive (OCE) Science Leader, Dr. Amanda Barnard, and their application to (among others) carbon-based nanomaterials.

Specifically you will:
• Develop statistical models of nanostructures.
• Develop high-throughput frameworks for structure sampling, generation and simulation.
• Develop automated data analysis systems, and databases.
• Assist in developing virtual libraries of carbon nanostructure properties under different conditions.
• Produce high quality scientific and technical outputs including journal articles, conference papers and presentations.
• Work collaboratively with scientists in different domains, including computational members of the Virtual Nanoscience laboratory, computational and experimental scientists within CSIRO.

Location: Parkville, Victoria
Salary: $81 – 88k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Ref no: VIC13/03912
Tenure: 3 year term

To be successful you will have:
• PhD degree in statistical physics, statistics or related area.
• A background in statistics, multivariate data analysis; such as archetypal analysis.
• A background in the use of R or similar statistical/informatics packages.
• Proficiency with Unix computing environments, and the development of programs and scripts using Fortran, C, C++ and/or Python.
• Excellent communication skills and a strong track record in publishing in high-quality scientific journals.
• Proven ability to think independently, and work collaboratively as part of a diverse research team.

Owing to terms of the fellowship, candidates must not have more than 3 years relevant post-doctoral experience at the time of taking up the position.

About CSIRO: The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is one of the largest and most diverse scientific organisations in the world. By igniting the creative spirit of our people, we deliver great science and innovative solutions that benefit industry, society and the environment.

The Research Group: The Virtual Nanoscience Laboratory (VNLab) within CSIRO Materials Science and Engineering (CMSE) is a multi-disciplinary research group focused on fundamental research into nanomorphology, the environmental stability of nanomaterials, and the predictive modeling of structure/property relationships of nanoscale materials targeted for emerging high-performance applications. Under the lead of Dr Amanda S Barnard (http://www.csiro.au/people/Amanda.Barnard.html), the group fosters partnerships with experimental groups with similar interests, and maintains a number of high-profile national and international collaborations. We work with government and universities to solve significant problems, from naturally occurring systems, to nanomaterials for bio-medical applications, catalysis, sensing and optoelectronics.
